Vivian Sue Hawkins, 74, of Jefferson City, died Sunday, January 16,2005, at her sister's home. She was born August 8, 1930, a daughter of C.R. "Ted" and Mabel Foster Hawkins.
Sue graduated from Brumley High School and earned her B.S. degree from Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg. She earned her M.S. and Ed.D. degrees from the University of Missouri - Columbia. Dr. Hawkins taught at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, and Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas, as well as public schools in Missouri and Texas, specializing in remedial reading.
She was a member of the First Christian Church, where she volunteered in the food distribution program. She was also a volunteer for the Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, and was active in Learning in Retirement.
Sue is survived by two sisters: Mary Collins of Bloomington, Minnesota; Judy Hawkins of Jefferson City; three nieces: Katherine Bauer of Mineola, Minnesota; Suzanne Woods of New York, New York; Kelly Steuart of St. Paul, Minnesota; and one nephew, Matthew Steuart of Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Teddy Jean Woods; and two infant brothers.
Friends will be received from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Houser Millard Funeral Directors - Jefferson City Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at the Houser Millard Funeral Directors - Jefferson City Chapel with Rev. Barbara K.
Gulick officiating. Interment will follow in the Hawkins Cemetery near Brumley with George Smith officiating.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to the First Christian Church Food Program, Community Hospices of America, or Hospice of Jefferson City and Mid-Missouri. Arrangements are under the direction of HOUSER-MILLARD Funeral Directors, 2613 W. Main St., 636-3838.
