Sue graduated from Brumley High School and earned her B.S. degree from Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg. She earned her M.S. and Ed.D. degrees from the University of Missouri - Columbia. Dr. Hawkins taught at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, and Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas, as well as public schools in Missouri and Texas, specializing in remedial reading.
She was a member of the First Christian Church, where she volunteered in the food distribution program. She was also a volunteer for the Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, and was active in Learning in Retirement.
Sue is survived by two sisters: Mary Collins of Bloomington, Minnesota; Judy Hawkins of Jefferson City; three nieces: Katherine Bauer of Mineola, Minnesota; Suzanne Woods of New York, New York; Kelly Steuart of St. Paul, Minnesota; and one nephew, Matthew Steuart of Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Teddy Jean Woods; and two infant brothers.
Friends will be received from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Houser Millard Funeral Directors - Jefferson City Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at the Houser Millard Funeral Directors - Jefferson City Chapel with Rev. Barbara K.
Gulick officiating. Interment will follow in the Hawkins Cemetery near Brumley with George Smith officiating.
