Mabel Clare Hawkins, 89, of Jefferson City died Sept 6, 1990 at St. Mary's Health Center in Jefferson City. She was born April 15, 1901 in Johnson County to Walter S. and Bessie S. Taggert Foster. On Aug 18, 1920 she was married in Warrensburg to Sen. Charles R. "Ted" Hawkins, who died Sept 21, 1959.
Mrs. Hawkins was a graduate of Normal High School at Warrensburg and received an associates degree from Central Missouri State Teachers College (now University). She was a member of the First Christian Church in Jefferson City, the Esther Circle, Capitol City Women's Club and Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority.
Mrs. Hawkins was a retired banker, having been a cashier for the Bank of Brumley and the Bank of Lake of the Ozarks. A Republican, she had served on county, congressional and state committees.
Surviving her are three daughters, Mary Collins of Bloomington, Miss., Judy Hawkins of Jefferson City and Sue Hawkins of San Antonio, Tex.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sept. 9 at the Jefferson City First Christian Church. Burial was in the Hawkins Cemetery near Brumley under the direction of Buescher Memorial Home in Jefferson City. The family suggests memorial contributions to the charity of the donors' choice.
