Roger Joseph Allarie, 89, passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born in Winthrop, ME on June 27, 1926, he was the son of Harvey and Adelia (Dumas) Allarie.
He attended schools in Winthrop. He had two brothers: Adrien Allarie, and Harvey Allarie, Jr.; and three sisters, Anita Allarie, Dorothy LaRue, and Juliet Dostie.
He was a World War II veteran, serving his country in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 as a gunner in the Naval Armed Guard. He later attended photography school in Connecticut, but returned to Maine to be closer to his family and the outdoor activities he enjoyed so much, especially fishing.
He worked hard his entire life, from his early days working in construction, to his time working at a small family-run grocery store in Lewiston where he did every job imaginable and loved working with his customers.
Roger married the love of his life, Deanna Belanger, on January 11, 1964, and they moved to Augusta where they would make their life and raise their family. He later retired from Statler Tissue Company after working there for 23 years.
He was a communicant of Saint Michael's Parish in Augusta. He was a member of American Legion Post 22 in Lewiston, the Club Calumet, and the St. Michael's Men's Club, where he enjoyed helping out with their various functions. He loved spending time with his family and friends, fishing with his grandsons, making all sorts of projects out of wood, and most any activity that would bring him outdoors.
He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers, and his sisters.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Deanna; one son, Daniel and his wife Susan; four grandchildren: Joshua Allarie, Brian Allarie, Matthew Allarie, and Isaac Allarie; one brother-in-law, Rosaire Dostie; two sisters-in-law: Helen Allarie, and Jo Anne LaPointe, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
The family would also like to give thanks for Roger's good friend Medley and all of the wonderful caregivers at Maine Veteran's Homes 'A Company', hospice, Togus VA, and the Alzheimer's Care Center in Gardiner.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, August 24th from 6-8 PM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta where officers and members of the Calumet Club are asked to meet at 6 PM to recite prayers for their departed member. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, August 25th at 11 AM at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Northern Ave., Augusta. Burial will be private at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.
