"John E. Kossow. No services were held at the request of the deceased and his family for the late John E. Kossow who died Wednesday, July 15, 1992, at the Watsonville Care Center in Watsonville. A former resident of Durham, John and Grace Kossow moved to Watsonville in 1971.
"Born on September 17, 1905, in Deer River, Minnesota, he attended local schools there. He entered into farming with his father in Durham in the 1930's. He served in the Pacific as a member of the U.S. Army during World War II and after being discharged he married the former Grace Switzer in Oakland in August of 1945. They purchased land and started a dairy farm on the Durham Dayton Hwy in 1947. Both were actively involved in the local affiliations of the American Legion, Legion Auxiliary, I.O.O.F. and Auxiliary, Farm Bureau, Durham Grange, and 4-H activities. John served as Commander of Post 673 Durham as well as District 4 Commander of the American Legion. Upon retirement to Watsonville he worked in several jobs for elderly individuals and was an active member of the local Legion and Auxiliary.
"John is survived by his wife Grace, also a resident of the Watsonville Care Center facility, four sisters, a sister-in-law and nephew, both of Watsonville. Interment was at Hecker Pass Cemetery in the Watsonville Mountains, and funeral arrangements were under the direction of Davis Mortuary in Watsonville."
In another article - REGISTER-PAJARONIAN, Thursday, July 16, 1992: "He leaves his wife Grace, of Watsonville; five sisters, Mary Cartwright and Elizabeth Myers, both of Minnesota, Leona Martin of Montero, Evelyn Beers of Durham, and Margaret Rollins of Alaska; and a sister-in-law Helen Goold of Watsonville. He also leaves numerous nieces and nephews. Private services were held at Davis Memorial Chapel, with burial at Pajaro Valley Memorial Park."
**The first obituary incorrectly stated that John was born and attended school in Bismark, North Dakota. It also listed his year of birth incorrectly. I have corrected the original to show his proper place and year of birth. Also, the two obituaries list different cemetery names for the interment. The correct location is Pajaro Valley Memorial Park.
