Ms. Garrett, 57, served as president of Local 1336 of the American Federation of Government Employees where she'd worked for more than 30 years. She also worked extensively with the United Way for more than five years. She was known as a giving person who would bend over backward for those in need.
She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Roy Gibbs Jr., of the home.
Services for the ladies was held at the Sheffield Family Life center on Saturday, June 10. Close to 2,000 people attended a wake held Friday night, June 9, at the Palestine Missionary Baptist Church of Jesus Christ.
The family eulogy was given by Rev. William H. Copeland Jr., pastor of the Morning Star Missionary Baptist church, in Kankakee, Ill.
Rev. Copeland was the brother of Mrs. Jeans and Mrs. Hunter and the uncle of Mrs. Garrett and Mrs. Gibbs.
All of the women will best be remembered for their love and dedication to their family and friends as well as helping others and those in need. They are greatly missed.
