Mary Ann was the only daughter and youngest of three children born to Harriet Webster and Samuel Henry Stevenson in Sheffield. She was christened and married in the Sheffield Parish Church.

After Mary Ann married Thomas Gilbert Elliott, the young couple made their home in Birmingham, Warwickshire, where they raised five children: Edward Walsh, Harriet, Mary Ann, Thomas Gilbert, and Emma. After the birth of the youngest child, the family moved back to Yorkshire -- in Nether Hallam, Sheffield, and North Sheffield.

They were living at St Philip's Road in North Sheffield when husband Thomas died in 1886. Mary Ann survived him by thirty years!

Newly widowed, Mary Ann and youngest daughter Emma (also newly widowed) made the voyage from Liverpool to Philadelphia in 1888. Accompanying them was Emma's 18-month-old daughter Kate and Mary Ann's nine-year-old granddaughter Isabel Ellis. Mary Ann and Emma made their home on Union Street in 1890, and Isabel went to live with her father Henry and brother Harry on Wood Street.

Per Mary Ann's death cert, she lived "they think 90 years." Informant was a Franklin White of 2330 Fernon Street. Actually, she was in her 89th year; she died from chronic nephritis with arteriosclerosis contributing.

Whereabouts between 1890 and 1916 of Mary Ann Elliott and her daughter Mary Ann (Ellis) is unknown. Anyone with information for either mother or daughter, please contact me!
