She was born on November 20, 1866 in Lieblingshof, Mecklenburg, Germany the daughter of Frederick Schalong and Christine Evers. Married Peter Josef Keller on 18 May 1884 in Richton, Cook Co., Illinois. The family lived in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois where Peter worked as a master carpenter. When his health began to fail they bought a small farm in Necedah, Juneau Co., Wisconsin in 1898. Peter thought his health would improve with fresh air and home grown food. He died in 1900 of stomach cancer leaving her with six children under 15 years of age,the youngest only two months old. She returned to her parents home temporarily and then to Chicago and took in washing to make a living until her oldest daughters were able to help out. Caroline (Lena) died of cancer at 55 years of age.
