Marie Kölling was the daughter of Ernst Heinrich Kölling and Anne Elizabeth Margarethe Hanna Wallger (or Walliger) who immigrated to the United States in 1834. Marie was born at #15 Eidinghausen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Prussia (now Germany). In the U.S. Marie's name became Mary Jane Collins.
Note: the birth year on the headstone is incorrect. Perhaps the European style of writing number "one" was mistaken for a "seven." Marie was the youngest child born in Germany to immigrate to the U.S. (a younger unnamed sibling was born and died on 28 Feb 1834 in Germany). Marie's three younger siblings were all born in Ohio.
On 9 Sep 1852 Mary married John Tostevin at the Methodist-Episcopal Church in Henry Co, Iowa. They had no children of their own, but did adopt three children (it is unknown if the adoptions were legally filed): A. L. Page, John Franklin Waite and his sister Grace Waite FAG#44275406 (her husband was Powell Garman, FAG#44275407).
John turned into an alcoholic and mistreated his wife. In fear for her life, on 4 January 1887, after 35 years of marriage, Mary petitioned for a divorce in Jewell Co., Kansas and it became final on 29 March 1887. She was granted the right to use her maiden name. Mary died on 24 March 1909 at the home of her daughter Grace in Limestone Twp, Jewell Co, Kansas. Mary, Grace and Grace's husband Powell are all buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, near Mankato, Jewell Co, Kansas.
