Hanna was the daughter of Ernst Heinrich Kölling (later changed to Collins) and Anne Elizabeth Margarethe Hanna Wallger (or Walliger). She was born in Ohio, four years after her parents immigrated to the U.S.

She married Lewis Dillon on 4 October 1864 near Oskaloosa, Iowa. Their eight children were: Luther, Franklin, Albert W. Mariette A., Clara May, William David, Frederick L., and John Collins Dillon. The first five children were born in Iowa, the last three in Kansas.

Both Lewis and Hanna are buried in Shiloh Cemetery in what was Corning Twp.
