Came to Nemaha 78 Years Ago

End Came to Mrs. Minnie Belshaw January 1.

Mrs. Minnie Jorden Stoldt Belshaw, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Jorden, among the earliest of Nemaha county pioneers, passed away in a Topeka hospital New Years day. She had been an invalid for the past 10 to 12 years. For 25 years she had lived in Kelly with her daughter, Mrs. Bert Cole, and Mr. Cole, receiving their tender care. Another daughter, Mrs. Emma Sanders, of Potter, also assisted in the care of her mother in her declining years.

Born in Germany, she emigrated at the age of four with her parents near the town of Bern in 1858. This was a year after the town of Seneca was founded and there were only a few log houses in the valley of the Nemaha river. When a small child, she worked for Mrs. Peter McQuaid, whose husband was a blacksmith in Seneca. She walked back and forth to her home, in later years she told of seeing wild turkeys, grey wolves, herds of deer and bands of Indians. She went through all the trying experiences of the frontier life. She was married to George Stoldt, Sr., when quite young, in 1869. Their first child was born in a dugout on the old homestead on Deer Creek. In 1878, Mr. and Mrs. Stoldt, Sr. moved to the site of Kelly, their first home being a log cabin. She reared a family of eight children. Two preceded her in death, Mrs. Alice Finch and Grover Stoldt. Those who survive are Henry Stoldt, Tongamoxie; Mrs. Emma Sanders, Potter; Fred Stoldt, Oseceola, Mo.; George Stoldt, Seneca; Mrs. Minnie Bronaugh, Council Grove, and Mrs. Katherine Cole, Kelly. Her husband George Stoldt passed away March 29, 1901. She was married to George Belshaw, Sr., in 1910. Mr. Belshaw died in England several years ago. She leaves two brothers and two sisters, Charles Jorden, Sr., Corning, Chris Jorden, Council Grove; Mrs. Dora Reid, Mrs. Christine Coe. Two sisters, Mrs. Mary Badesheim, and Mrs. Sophia Breebles, Seneca, and a brother, John Jorden, Wyoming, are deceased. She also leaves 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Universal church for 40 years.

Funeral services were held from the Seneca Congregational church Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Charles A Richard. A quartet, Mrs. Charles M. Vorhees, Mrs. J. B. Wood, Mrs. Glenn F. Murphy and Miss Ruth Vorhees, sang. Miss Kathryn Rucker was the pianist.

The pallbearers were Henry Haverkamp, Peter Rettele, Andrew Bokern, Joe Ketter, Victor Tappehorn, Jake Russ. Burial was in Seneca cemetery beside her husband, George Stoldt, Sr.
