Although Jesse R. Vawter's monument shows the year of his death as 1900, the death date is actually 13 May 1901. This date is supported by the Indiana State Board of Health Certificate of Death; Vernon, Indiana, Baptist Church records; and an obituary in the Vernon Journal 15 May 1901.

Death of Jesse Vawter
Aged 83 years, 10 months and two days, Jesse Vawter after an illnest, iness of two weeks, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mattie W Vernon. Monday morning. Deceased was born in Jefferson county near Madison, but moved to Jennings county when he was about 11 years old which place has ever since been his home.

He was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Parks who still survives him. Eleven children were born to them, nine of whom are living, viz., Mrs. Lewis Wagner, Vernon; William A. Vawter, Mound Valley, Kansas; Smith W. Vawter, Spring Dale, Ark.; John S. Vawter, Neosho, Mo.; Mrs. Sarah F.
Grinstead, Iowa; George W. Vawter, Queensville, this county; Mrs. Ella Cary, Cincinnati, O.; Jesse P. Vawter, Osgood, Ind.; and Mrs. Mattie West of Vernon.

For 66 years Mr. Vawter had been a most faithful member of the Baptist church and died in the full triumph of a living faith. The funeral occured from the home Tuesday afternoon with his pastor, Rev. Chesley Holmes officiating, after which interment occurred at the Vernon cemetery.
