Joseph Kibbin Akin was the 1st born son of 8 sons out of 13 children born to James Akin b.9 Dec 1781 in Chesterfield Co., VA & d.25 Jun 1832 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY and to Judith Baker b.30 Nov 1787 in Chesterfield Co., VA & d.23 Nov 1839 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY and who were married on 18 Sep 1805 in Chesterfield Co., VA.

While I have listed that Joseph was born in Cumberland Co., KY, it is quite possible he and his 2 brothers, Phineas Webbin Akin and James William Akin (my 3rd g-grandfather)were possibly born in Chesterfield Co., VA, prior to their family moving to Cumberland Co., KY. I have yet to find a record to prove this either way.

Joseph is the patriarch of the Akin Family who moved from Cumberland County and settled in Adair County, Kentucky, establishing quite a large family there.

While I have not completely proven he is buried in the Antioch Cemetery, it is highly likely because I have yet to find any Akin family member in Adair County, of this period, buried in any other cemetery, so this is where he and his spouse must be.

Joseph married Nancy B. Fowler on 26 Mar 1829 in Cumberland Co., KY. Nancy was b.abt 1810 in Barren Co., KY. & d.23 Feb 1887 in Adair Co., KY, most likely Leatherwood area.

Joseph & Nancy had 8 children to my knowledge, however, a 1st born daughter b.abt 1831 eludes me. The children that I am aware of are:

1. Charles Henry Akin b.abt Jul 1833 in Cumberland Co., KY & d.20 Sep 1908 in East St. Louis, St. Clair, IL.
Married: Mary Ann Norris on 28 Feb 1854 in Cumberland Co., KY

2. James Samuel Akin b.16 Jul 1834 in Adair Co., KY & d.18 Mar 1899 in Adair Co., KY, most likely in Gradyville.
Married: Nancy Catherine Jones on 26 Feb 1871 in Adair Co., KY.

3. Nancy Jane Akin b.30 Jul 1838 in Cumberland Co. & d.23 Dec 1913 in Fairplay, Adair Co., KY.
Married: Robert Harvey on 21 Jan 1858 in Adair Co., KY.

Note: A couple of Joseph's children were born in Cumberland Co., possibly his spouse, Nancy, returning to her parents to birth the children.

4. Joseph Marion Akin b.9 Feb 1842 in Adair Co., KY & d.16 Feb 1924 in Adair Co., KY, most likely in Elroy, where he was living with his son. Joseph married two sisters from the Christie family. They were:

Marriage #2: Amanda Louisa Christie on 16 Dec 1873 in Adair Co., KY.

5. Juliet E. Akin b.abt 1844 in Adair Co., KY & d.abt 1891-1892 in Adair Co., KY, in the Leatherwood area.
Married: Mathew Sparks on 21 Jan 1868.
Note: Mathew Sparks had been previously married to Mary Ann England on 26 Mar 1849.

6. George Robert Akin b.22 Mar 1847 in Cumberland Co., KY & d.13 Oct 1931 in Adair Co., KY, most likely Elroy area.
Marriage #1: Martha A. Dillingham on 2 Apr 1867 in Adair Co., KY.
Marriage #2: Mary Catherine Demunbrum abt 1870-1872 in Adair Co., KY.
Marriage #3: Molly Unknown abt 1925 in Adair Co., KY.
