Judith Sarah Jane Akin was the 13th child (last) and 5th daughter born to James Akin b.9 Dec 1781 in Chesterfield Co., VA & d.25 Jun 1832 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY and to Judith Baker b.30 Nov 1787 in Chesterfield Co., VA & d.23 Nov 1839 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY and who were married on 18 Sep 1805 in Chesterfield Co., VA.

Judith Akin's story is quite complicated, as she may or may not have been married during her life. I am currently studying material from the Burkesville Library which may lend some light as to her story, but until I conclude that research, I must just stick to the current facts.

Judith was born a month after the death of her father, James Akin, in Jun of 1832. Her mother Judith (Baker) Akin died when she was 7. Being #13 was certainly an unlucky number for Judith. Both Judith, one other older unmarried sister, Virginia Jennie Akin, and her sister Vienna, who was just married to John R. Cary lived in the same household, most likely the original home of their parents, James & Judith (Baker) Akin.

By 1860, Vienna and John Cary departed for Missouri, leaving Judith and her older sister, Virginia Jennie, on their own. At this time, they had three children living with them and no designation on the census as to how they were related. By this time, an early son of Virginia Jennie, Columbus Washington Akin b.1841, has left the household. He is not to be confused with a son of Judith, named Columbus Washington Akin b.1864.

By 1870, Judith is still living with her sister Virginia, but now Judith has 5 sons, and her sister Virginia has one daughter.

By 1880, Judith and Virginia are still living together, same configuration, however, Robert, Judith's first born son has left the household. According to my records, Robert married Lettie Ann Russell on 5 Aug 1879 in Clay Co., TN, just south of Burkesville, KY.

I recently spent a day in Burkesville Courthouse and Library and was fortunate to find a letter on file at the Library from a descendant of one of Judith Akin's sons, James Charles Finney Augustus Akin, who relates in that letter to another Akin family member in New Mexico that his father told him that his mother, Judith, had died during a measles epidemic, prior to him heading to Texas in 1887.

Therefore, we can place a date of death for Judith between, approx. 1881-1887 in Burkesville. This is why, I am parking her here in the Burkesville Cemetery, until further research might uncover the positive location of her grave. I would suspect, however, it is quite likely she is buried here.

This family has been extremely difficult to put together and track, but I believe I am quite accurate in my research regarding them, based on other family genealogies, genealogical reports from Burkesville, other family members, and descendants of Judith, who have been very forthcoming with information and pictures of the family.

There have been rumors in the Akin family alleging Judith's recruitment into the Mormon faith but I believe I am dismissing those rumors sufficiently with my research.

All I can say, the children she had or raised all went to Texas and populated quite a large portion of Texas. ha I have to laugh a bit, because my list of descendants just keeps going. Perhaps she had a coding system of the father or father's in their names? She used many initials that her sons used to their advantage during their life, switching from one to the other.

Please Note:

12 Sep 2015 - On this date, a commitment was made at the Akin Family Reunion of J.C.F.A. Akin in Fort Worth, TX to attempt to use Y-DNA from three male Akins', descendants of 3 of Judith's 5 sons to determine a surname for her spouse or spouses. At this time, we have a representative from the Columbus Washington Akin Family, James Charles Finney Augustus Akin Family, and the Silas Franklin Akin Family. We need a male Akin member to volunteer and participate from the Robert Marion Akin Family and the John Samuel Akin Family.

Please contact me if you are a Male Akin from one of the two last families mentioned.

01/03/2016 - Y-DNA Tests have concluded what appears to be 2 Non-Marital Relationships responsible for 3 of Judith's 5 children.

Listed below are the results based on matching Y-DNA to the respective surname families, then connecting the Cumberland County suspected male partner of Judith, living in her area, to those matching families, concluding the highest probability of certainty.

3. Columbus Washington Akin: Father: Charles Young b.abt 1808 in Wayne Co., KY & d.bef 1870 in Cumberland Co., KY.

4. James Charles Finney Augustus Akin: Father: James Jackson Murphy b.22 Jul 1815 in Virginia & d.19 Jun 1891 in Burkesville, Cumberland, KY.

5. Silas Franklin Akin: Father: Charles Young b.abt 1808 in Wayne Co., KY & d.bef 1870 in Cumberland Co., KY.
