Mildred Alice Caroline Grabow was born February 26, 1914, at Aurelia, ND, the daughter of William and Lydia (Scharbow) Grabow. She was raised on the family farm and attended grade school in Donnybrook. She was baptized and confirmed at the Moravian Church in Aurelia, ND. She graduated from Donnybrook High School in 1932.
After graduating, she worked for several families in the Donnybrook area, doing domestic housework and caring for the area families’ children.
On June 20, 1940, Mildred married Reinhold Elker at the Moravian Church in Aurelia, ND. They made their home on a farm north of Surrey, ND, for 56 years, where they raised small grains, cattle and sheep.
Together they raised their six children. Mildred always had a large vegetable garden. She also loved her flower garden. She cooked, canned vegetables and fruit and baked bread every week. She also loved to bake, sew, doing craft work, and crochet. Mildred could sew anything even without a pattern. She designed owls made out of brushed yarn which she perfected.
In 1996, they moved to Minot, and Reinhold passed away in May of 1999.
Following her husband’s death, Mildred continued to live at Dakota Terrace Apartments until moving into ManorCare Health Services in 2010.
Mildred was proud that she lived to a milestone of 100 years in 2014. She was reluctant to have a birthday celebration, but very much enjoyed the day with her family and friends. She would have been 101 this February.
Her loving family includes: children, Roland (Deb) Elker, Minot, Carlton (Elaine) Elker, Underwood, ND, Jerilyn (Rodger) Hanson, Minot, Susan (John) Zietz, Minot, Philip Elker, Mandan, ND, and Royce (Vonnie) Elker, Mankato, MN; grandchildren, Beth (Terry) Murphy, Jay Hanson (Amy Swenson), and Jodi (Van) Snyder; Jason (Lori) Bryant, Jared (Amanda) Zietz, and Jordan (Deanna) Zietz; Jamie Elker, Joel (Chelsea) Elker, and Melissa Elker; and Danielle, Eric, and Beret Elker; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Pearl Wright, Fargo, ND; and numerous nieces and nephews.
