Carlton Elker, 72, Underwood, ND, formerly of Burlington, ND, passed away Friday, September 9, 2016, at Trinity Homes in Minot, after a short illness.

Carlton Jerome Elker was born December 28, 1943, the son of Reinhold and Mildred (Grabow) Elker, in Minot, ND. He was raised on the family farm near Surrey, ND, and educated in Surrey. He was baptized and confirmed in the Moravian Church in Aurelia, ND. He was a member of the Surrey High School Basketball team and graduated as Valedictorian from Surrey High School in 1962.

He furthered his education by attending Minot State College, where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education and minor in English Education. During his time at Minot State, he was active in the Campus Players and had been in many plays.

Carlton began his teaching career in Bismarck, ND, and later taught in Argyle, MN. .
Carlton then served his alternative service and worked as an orderly at St. Luke’s Hospital for a year and a half.

Carlton married Elaine Faye Grinaker December 27, 1970, near Kindred, ND. They made their home in Fargo for a short time and then moved to Mott, ND, where he was an Art Teacher for one year. They then moved to Grafton, where he was an Art Teacher for 3 years. Carlton left teaching and moved to Moorhead, MN, where he worked in sales for 20 years. In 1995, they moved to Minot, where he worked at ProMark for a time, then the Minot Area Council for the Arts, and finally at Trinity Nursing Home. In 2004, they moved to Burlington, where they resided until the Souris River Flood of 2011. Their house and most of their belongings were destroyed in the Souris River Flood. They lived in a FEMA temporary housing unit for a year and a half. Finally, they moved to Underwood, ND, where they were currently residing.

Carlton was a very giving person. He donated blood plasma, veteran’s organizations, Salesian Missions, the Covenant House in New York, and to other charities.

He was an artist and he sold and donated a number of pieces of his art work in Moorhead and Minot.

Surviving family includes: wife of 46 years, Elaine, Underwood, ND; brothers and sisters, Roland (Debbie) Elker, Minot, Jerilyn (Rodger) Hanson, Minot, Susan Zietz, Minot, Philip Elker (Shirley Kraft), Mandan, ND, and Royce (Vonnie) Elker, Mankato, MN; brother-in-law, Larry (Kathy) Grinaker, Fargo, ND; aunt, Pearl Wright, Fargo, ND; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.

Carlton was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister, Charlotte; brother-in-law, John Zietz; and many aunts and uncles.

A Private Funeral Service will take place at a later date.
