Les was born to James Everett Powell and Susannah Frances Kearsley Powell.

He joined AA on Aug. 5, 1958 and received a commemorative coin for 48 years of sobriety on Aug. 5, 2006.

In World War II, four of his brothers served their country: Everett, Francis, and Ralph in the Army and Harold in the Navy.

He was a corporal in the Oregon National Guard from April 28, 1947, to May 12, 1948. On May 13, 1948, he entered the United States Naval Training Center in San Diego, Calif. After recruit training he served on landing craft in California and in the Japan-Korea area. In 1955 he was Boatswain's Mate Second Class and was transferred to duty at Pier 91 in Seattle.

In 1957 he received his orders to the Tugboat Nanigo, based there. In 1959 he was upgraded to Boatswain's Mate First Class, and in 1960 he was appointed tugmaster of the Nanigo. He later served on the USS Tatnuck, a seagoing tug. In 1963, he and his family departed for Cartegena, Spain, where he was upgraded to Chief Boatswain's Mate. Upon return to the United States, he had temporary duty on the USS Orion, at Norfolk, Va. Then the family was off to Longview, Texas, where he was a Navy Recruiter from 1965 to 1967 and honorably discharged from the Navy on Oct. 9, 1967.

On Oct. 10, 1967 he was sworn into the Army as a Warrant Officer and sent to U.S. Army Transportation School at Fort Eustis, Va, for Faculty Development Courses, and became an instructor in boat-handling. On Oct. 10, 1968, he was appointed temporary CW02. He was in Vietnam and Port of Vung Tuay, Vietnam. On Jan. 10, 1969, he piloted a tugboat taking a floating crane from Sattahip, Thailand to Singapore for overhaul. Upon return with the crane, he was appointed in charge of the Port of Sattahip. He became a permanent Chief Warrant Officer 2 on Oct. 10, 1970, and received an honorable discharge from the Army on Oct. 31, 1970.

The family moved from Texas to Lewiston. He graduated on the dean's list at Lewis-Clark State College in the mid-1970s. He worked for 11 years at Job Service in Lewiston, as Veterans Rep under the leadership of the governor of Idaho. The last move was from Lewiston to Spokane, where he worked at Fairchild Air Force Base as an Education Counselor for 18 years until retiring in 2004 at the age of 73.

There will be no services. Neptune Society is entrusted with cremation. Burial at sea.

Interment was held for both Barbara and Les at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake, Wash.
