Of German ancestry, Eleanor Clara Meiners was born on October 2, 1906 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio to George Gerard Meiners and Clara H. Estermann Meiners. She was the fourth of seven siblings who survived early infancy and childhood out of about thirteen born.

Eleanor was sometimes described as "sickly." In the summer of 1930, she accompanied her father, mother, and brothers Paul and Roger to Europe. One of the family's stops was at the shrine of Bernadette of Lourdes, France, hoping for a cure for Eleanor. While in Munich, Germany, her father wrote of her: "Eleanor has not been sick since we left but has an upset stomach. We believe it comes from that Italian cooking." A little more than four months later, Eleanor died suddenly of myocarditis at age 24 on November 8, 1930 in Cincinnati. Three days later her funeral, a requiem high mass, was held at Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church in Cincinnati, and she was buried in the Meiners family plot in Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Cincinnati. Her brother Roger, six years her junior, was also on that trip to Europe. Like Eleanor he died young, at age 27 in 1940. (He had tuberculosis.) Roger was buried on one side of where their parents were to be buried and Eleanor on the other side. Antibiotics that might have saved Eleanor's life were not introduced until the late 1930s, and antivirals that might have saved her life were not introduced until the 1980s.
