Lawrence Harry ("Bill") Meiners was born April 29, 1904 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio the son and third of seven children (out of thirteen born) who survived early infancy and childhood of George Gerard Meiners and Clara H. Estermann Meiners. On September 8, 1926 Bill married Magdalen Niesen Meiners at Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Cincinnati. The 1930 Cincinnati, Ohio census shows him working as an insurance agent and married to Magdalen, born about 1903. The 1940 New York City census shows him as single, working as a chief steward in the Merchant Marine where he honed his skills as a chef. In February of 1942 when he registered for the draft, he was employed by the MacFadden Foundation in Dade County, Florida. On June 22, 1942 in Broward County, Florida, he married Jewell Estelle Perkins Meiners, originally from Kentucky. She was not Catholic, and unrelated to that fact, Bill drifted away from the church. For years his sister Ceil Meiners Donnelly gave up butter as a sacrifice to bring her brother back to the faith.

After three miscarriages, Bill and Jewell had one daughter, Linda Meiners Palle. While the couple separated in 1949 when Linda was an infant, they were not divorced until 1964. Linda has no memory of her father. Jewell worked as a waitress to support Linda. Bill died in Daytona Beach, Volusia County, Florida at age 75 on April 20, 1980 and is buried in an unmarked grave in the Meiners family plot in Cincinnati's Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Bill's burial took place almost three weeks after his death.

Bill's ancestry was German. He had brown hair, brown eyes, a ruddy complexion, and was about six feet tall.

Thanks to Bill's daughter and the Meiners family in general for so much of this information. Any errors, however, are mine alone. Please go to the "edit" link on this site with any corrections or additions. If a closer relative than I would like to manage this grave, please let me know.
