William Sarvis was my 3rd great grandfather, through his son Henry Madison Sarvis, and his wife Mary Preston.
*******
Throughout all of the family trees, and family history, everyone has John William Sarvis and Laura Hannah Floyd, as
William's parents. But, the dates don't support that.
Laura Hannah Floyd was supposedly born 16 Nov 1772, in Horry County, South Carolina.
William Sarvis, was supposedly born in 1776, in Pennsylvania. Laura would have only been 4 years old at the time of his birth.
Has anyone questioned this before? I have not seen any comments to suggest it. It is just passed along, from tree to tree.
This is my research:
According to family trees, John William Sarvis Jr.'s first marriage was to Cady Hatch, with her first child being born in 1781. He would have been around 30 years old,
based on his birth year of 1751, and Cady was about 20.
Did John William have a previous marriage, before Cady, that produced William, in 1776? Or, was William the first child of Cady and John? I have not found any concrete marriage information, just a guess based on the birth of her children. Was John and Cady in Pennsylvania, in 1776?
Everyone after 1776, was married, born, and died in South Carolina.
In the 1790 census, for Prince George, Georgetown, South Carolina, John Sarvis had 1 white male under age 16, and 4 white females.
Was this son William? or Gabriel born in 1786?
After much research, and not finding the documents, I am going to "assume" that John William Sarvis Jr. had a marriage before Cady, which produced William in 1776, perhaps in Pennsylvania as stated, but perhaps not.
John was married to Cady from about 1778 until her death in 1799. He immediately married Laura Hannah Floyd, and their first child was born in 1800.I know from history, marriages and living arrangements were sketchy.
William would have been 24, based on his birth year of 1776, and, by then,he had married Mary Shelton, in 1797, in Kentucky.
Also, as a matter of interest, William and Mary had 6 daughters that are known, and not one of them were named either Cady, Laura, or Hannah, which is customary.
Therefore, based on all of these facts, I feel that William's mother is unknown at this time. Cady and Laura Hannah Floyd were probably his step mothers, Or, these are not his parents at all. We may never know for sure.
This changes my family history, if my research and theory are correct. If anyone has any proof to support any of these relationships, please contact me.
