Emerson was the superintendent of the oil and water plant for the Santa Fe Railroad in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. He was struck by a north-bound passenger train and died soon after from his injuries without ever regaining consciousness. He had worked for railroads about seven years, starting his career in Houston, Texas as an assistant machinist for Missouri Kansas and Texas Railroad. His body was shipped back to Tennessee and arrived in Milan on February 20, 1910.

Emerson grew up in the Chapel Hill community. He had not yet married.
