Susannah was the oldest daughter of Phillip and Elizabeth Zolman. Her parents & family moved to Knox County, Ohio in 1812 or 1813 from Frederick County, Maryland. Her grandfather, Johann Adam Zollman, was buried at the Zolman Cemetery in Frederick County, MD. Susannah married David R. Powell on July 28, 1831 in Knox County, Ohio. (Click on marriage record picture for narrative) In 1837, Susannah moved to Farmington, MO with her parents, siblings, husband and the first four of six children of hers that survived to adulthood. (#5 might have been born in either Ohio or Missouri)

David & Susannah's 6 children were:
1) Clark Powell (b. 1828)
2) Marie Powell (b. 1832)
3) Basil Anton Powell (b. 1833)
4) Rachel Powell (b. 1835)
5) Amanda Powell (b. 1837)
6) Harriet Powell (b. 1844)

If you look at the year dates of her family, in 1842 she lost her father, three years later in 1845 she lost her husband when the youngest child was 1 year old and the oldest 17 and then two years later she lost her mother in '47. There would have had to been some kind of family support structure by her brothers and sisters, one would assume, to help support Susannah and her six children. Susannah's younger sister, Rachel Zolman Meredith, went through the same tragedy 8 years earlier when she became a widow at the age of 28 with five young children.
