Melvin John Hansen, 86, of Hamer, passed away September 8, 2014, at EIRMC in Idaho Falls.

Melvin was born in American Fork, Utah, July 26, 1928, to George Heber Hansen and Maud Lowe. He was the youngest of 5 children. His parents moved to Hamer when he was five years old. He went to school in Hamer and graduated from Hamer High School in 1946. He attended Ricks College where he met Lula Lucy Harris. They were married in the Idaho Falls Temple on July 28, 1948. He earned his bachelors and masters degrees from Brigham Young University.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as Bishop twice, Elders Quorum and High Priest group leader and instructor, adult Sunday School teacher, ward and stake choir director, stake patriarch, and served as an officiator in the Idaho Falls LDS temple for nine years. He started the early morning seminary program for the Beaver Creek Ward in Dubois, Idaho.

He worked in the public education system for forty years, teaching chorus, band, math, and science. He taught in Hamer, Ririe, Rigby, Dubois, and Terreton. He was principal of Terreton Elementary, West Jefferson High School, Hamer Elementary, the first Business Manager of School District #251, and Superintendent of School District #253. He retired in 1991. He served as president of two teachers associations, the Sixth District Music Educators Association, the Region Six Principals Association and the Region Six Superintendents Association. He served on the BYU-Idaho Emeritus Board and was a charter member of the Hamer Lions Club.

He loved spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed taking camping trips and vacations with them. He started a family auto mechanic business so that his children could have summer employment and be able to spend more time together. He enjoyed working in his wood and mechanic shops, building and/or repairing things around the house or yard, and working on his “mini-farm”.

He is survived by all seven children, Janeen Leonardson (Gary) of Dillon, Montana, Dianne Berrett (Brent) of Roberts, Marie Patterson (Robert) of Heber City, Utah, Karen Grover (Kirk) of Inkom, John of Hamer, Dennis (Emilie) of Moreland, Scott (Karen) of Elwood, Utah; 36 grand children; and 56 great-grand children.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Lula, and daughter in-law, Katie.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 13, at the Hamer LDS church. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the services, both at the church. Burial will be at the West Jefferson Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hamer Lions Club.
