"UNCLE" WILLIS MARTIN DEAD, WAS ALMOST A CENTURY OLD
Highly Respected Citizen Called Away Sunday Morning At Anthony Elwood's Home

"Uncle" Willis Martin dead. Death came to this aged citizen Sunday morning at 5:30 o'clock at the Anthony Elwood home on West Washington street where he has been cared for for some time by his great-grand-daughter Mrs. Elwood. he was in his 96th year and well known in almost every home in Centerville. He was 95 years, one month and 20 days of age, and had been in feeble health in both body and mind for several years. During the later years he has been a great sufferer and has been cared for by both family and relatives, the last months of his life being spent at the Elwood home. The funeral was held this afternoon from the Methodist church conducted by the pastor, the Rev. W. H. Perdew and interment was made in Oakland.

Mr. Martin had been a resident of this county for 58 years, coming here from Harrison county, Indiana in 1850, where he was born, March 21, 1813. he lived on a farm several years before moving to Centerville and during his life became possessed of considerable property. In 1836 he was married to Miss Jane Woodward and to them was born eight children, six of whom are living. Alexander, living south of the city; Thomas W. and W. C. living in Centerville; Melvin living in California; J. C. in Unionville, Missouri and Mrs. Elizabeth Simmons of Chicago, who has been here the past month at the home of her brother, Thomas. The deceased was at one time deputy sheriff of this county and has ever been a prominent and highly respected citizen. His wife preceded him in death many years and since then he has lived with relatives who have cared for him tenderly and ministered to his every want. He was a member of the Methodist church and during his active life was an active Christian worker. His death will be deeply mourned by a large circle of relatives and friends.

Appanoose county has lost many of her older citizens during the past two years, and Mr. Martin is next to the oldest who has died in recent years. He had almost reached the century mark which speaks plainly for his good life well spent.
