Among the honored and respected citizens of this township is STEPHEN HOLMES. He was born in New Jersey November 8, 1801. His rearing and occupation in early life was rather mixed, as he alternately followed milling, boating, oyster fishing and farming. May 16, 1824, he married MISS MARY WORDEN, also a native of New Jersey, who was born in 1808. Some few years after his marriage he removed to Highland county, Ohio, where he followed farming till 1855, when he came to Henderson county, Illinois, bought and permanently located on Sec. 27, T. 10, R. 4 His honored wife died August 1, 1882, leaving him to close up life's journey alone.
