This is the Holmes of the Game Farm property in Forked River. Francis Woodmansee, the last of his family to abide in the mansion, sold the estate to Captain Joseph Holmes, Sr.
Holmes farmed the land and operated two coastal trading schooners running between Maine and Florida with Forked River as their home port. His son Joseph, Jr., also sailed a coastal trading schooner while farming. He erected a large substantial frame house facing Route 9 on the site of which now stands a Bell Telephone installation.
