Sam Brink, 88, Sheldon, died Monday, Aug. 18 at Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon.

Services were held Wednesday, Aug. 20, at the First Reformed Church in Hospers. Burial was at Hospers Cemetery.

Sam Brink, son of Chalres & Nettie (Roos) Brink, was born Jan. 3, 1915 in Hospers. He was raised in Hospers, where he attended school. He married Evelyn Menning on April 1, 1941, in Newkirk. He spent 37 months in the U.S. military during World War II. He saw combat action in the Makin Islands, the Solomon Island and Okinawa, Japan. The Brinks farmed east of Hospers until 1958 when they moved into Hospers. They owned and operated Hospers Dry Cleaners and Hospers Kountry Kitchen. He also drove a fan for Hope Haven in Rock Valley. They later moved to Sheldon and recently became residents of Oak Park Care Center.

He was a lifetime member of First Reformed Church in Hospers, where he served on the consistory as a deacon and an elder for many years. He taught the young married adults Sunday School class for nearly 30 years. He was a member of the Reuter American Legion Post and the volunteer fire department of Hospers. He also volunteered at Village Northwest Unlimited in Sheldon. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards and sharing his war experiences. He played softball and baseball in his younger years and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; a son, Jerry; a daughter, Julie; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, a brother, Mert and Marlys; and a sister-in-law, Eleanor.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Pearl and Sally; and two brothers, Arie and Jim & Jo.
