Mary was the daughter of John Shippey. She was possibly the child with this name born 21 Aug. 1697, in Woodbridge, Middlesex Co., East New Jersey, to John Shippey and his first wife Judith Worth. However, the Aug. 1723 marriage of Mary Shippey and Thomas Combs at Stony Brook (now Princeton), old Middlesex Co., NJ, was consented to by John Shippey and his second wife Susannah. This suggests that Mary (Shippey) Combs was a minor in 1723, and therefore was the daughter of Susannah, not Judith (in which case Judith's daughter Mary died young).

Mary (Shippey) Combs's husband Thomas is believed to be the same who settled in Upper Freehold Twp., Monmouth Co., NJ. This Thomas was married to Keziah Liming by 1748. Thus Mary is presumed to have died before then.

Gravesite Details

This memorial is tentatively placed here based on Mary's membership in the Chesterfield Monthly Meeting of Friends (of which East Branch is a preparatory meeting), her husband's residence nearby, and the burial of other Combs family members here.
