John was born 26 July or Sep. 1732 (sources disagree), the son of Thomas Combs and, apparently, his wife Mary Shippey. He was born in New Jersey, undoubtedly. It is not clear whether his parents resided in old Hunterdon, old Middlesex, or Monmouth County at the time of John's birth.

He married Rebecca FitzRandolph. Presumably he died in Upper Freehold Twp., Monmouth Co., NJ, where he resided at the time of death.

John and Rebecca were Quakers, as were their parents and most of their children. He was admitted to Chesterfield Monthly Meeting in 1785, and recommended to be a minister there in 1792. In 1796, he and two of his sons signed an anti-slavery petition to the State Legislature.

Several children of John and Rebecca are linked below. In all there were 11, as follows:

1. Thomas (twin), born 24 June 1754--linked below
2. Isaac (twin), born 24 June 1754--linked below
3. Mary, born 25 May 1758--linked below
4. Rhoda, born 9 Apr. 1760--linked below
5. Ursilla, born 1 Mar. 1762--linked below
6. Stephen, born 7 Dec. 1763---linked below
7. Rebecca, born 15 Dec. 1765, m. Thomas Cook
8. Huldah, born 21 May 1768, died unmarried
9. John Jr., born 7 Apr./June 1770, m. Mary Ashton
10. Benjamin, born 30 Apr./Nov. 1772, m. Charity Craft
11. Ezekiel, born 7 Sep. 1774--linked below

Gravesite Details

John's burial here seems very likely based on his membership in Chesterfield Monthly Meeting (of which East Branch is a preparatory meeting), his residence nearby, and the burial of two sons here whose graves are near ancient broken stones.
