Thomas was probably born about 1690-1702. Circumstantial evidence shows that he was the son of Francis and Mary Combs of Newtown, Long Island, and that he was the same who settled in Hopewell Twp., old Burlington/Hunterdon (now Mercer) Co., NJ, with siblings Francis Combs Jr. and Elizabeth (Combs) Blackwell. He owned 166 acres along Stony Brook near what would later be called Mount Rose.

He married first to Mary Shippey in Aug. 1723 at the Stony Brook (Princeton) Preparatory Meeting of Friends, in old Middlesex (now Mercer) Co., NJ, near to Hopewell. Thomas and Mary had at least two sons: John (linked below) and James. The family relocated to Upper Freehold Twp., Monmouth Co., by 1742, when Thomas's Hopewell property was leased to his brother-in-law Robert Blackwell. Thomas's brother Francis apparently also relocated there, dying intestate in 1752.

Thomas married second to Keziah Liming before 1748. They had at least two daughters: Lydia (linked below) and Dinah. Both are named in Thomas's 1757 will and in the will of their maternal grandfather John Liming, also 1757. Dinah, named for the maternal grandmother, married Benjamin Hutchinson. Her family might have moved to Virginia.

Thomas died between June and October 1757 based on his estate papers, presumably at his Upper Freehold Twp. residence. His homestead passed to son John. Son James also remained in Upper Freehold where he died testate about 1813, leaving children.

Gravesite Details

This memorial is tentatively placed here based on Thomas's membership in the Chesterfield Monthly Meeting of Friends (of which East Branch is a preparatory meeting), his residence nearby, and the burial of other Combs family members here.
