He was a graduate of St. Joseph Military Academy, Hays. He attended Regis University, Denver, and received his bachelor's degree in commerce from Creighton University, Omaha, Neb.
He married Marianne L. Josten on March 30, 1937. She died in 1974. He married Evelyn Lucille Stephens on July 5, 1975. She died in 1996.
He was a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. He was a farmer, certified public accountant and served as mayor of Hays in the 1950s. He was a professor at Regis University. He was controller at Elitch Gardens in Denver, retiring in 1976. He lived in Hays from 1943 to 1956, in Denver from 1956 until last year, when he moved to Karval, Colo. for a year, then to Tuscumbia this year.
Survivors include two daughters, Christine Char, Denver, and Julianne Cheney, Tuscumbia; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers, Jacob, Frank A., Andrew, Peter, Joseph, Joseph A., and Paul, and six sisters, Ida Staab, Clara Herman, Agnes Tubbs, Josepha Goetz, Mary Wiesner, and Mary Catherine Angerer, and a daughter, Pauline Wiesner.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, with Father Earl Befort officiating; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery. A vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Cline's Mortuary of Hays, 1919 E. 22nd. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Friday, all at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to Thomas More Prep-Marian High School.
