Julia Belle Bean was the wife of Victor Ashmore Sr. After 50 years of marriage, Victor passed away in 1970. They were married on April 23, 1920. Julia was the proud mother of Victor Jr. and Mary Frances Ashmore.

Julia was the oldest of five children of Joseph Able Bean and Nancy Elizabeth Gray Bean (Nannie Bean). Julia has two brothers Joseph Hoyt Bean and Charles Clinton Bean and a two younger sister Mary Etta Bean Lloyd, and Ruby Lee Bean who died at the age of 4 (1898-1902). The Bean family grew up and lived in the areas of Buena Vista and Shannon, Mississippi.

In the early 1930s, the stock market crashed and the banks failed and hard times hit the entire country due to the Great Depression, Mississippi was no exception. But Julia did not intend for the scarcity of money to prevent her family from having a special Christmas holiday in 1933. Mary Frances records in her book, "Just Passing Through,"..."I helped pick out the pecans for the fruit cake, which was made in advance...As the big day approached the odors from the kitchen were tantalizing. There was the smell of fresh coconut being grated for cakes and pies as well as divinity candy, but the 'piece de resistance' was mother's Amalgamation cake..." That Christmas, Mary Frances was 8 years old, she saw her special present under the tree in a blue box with pink tissue paper, a baby doll with "open and shut eyes." After 80 years, I still have this same baby doll sleeping in a wicker basket in my bedroom. The baby doll symbolizes one of my more memorable childhood Christmases. This is a story of parents sacrificing for their children, even when times were hard.
