Barbara Alice Whisnant, daughter of Philip Whisenhunt and Mary "Polly" Abernathy, was born April 11, 1854 in Catawba Co. and died July 6, 1921 in Hickory. She was buried at Mountain Grove Baptist Church in Hickory, NC. Barbara Alice had no children of her own, but she raised her niece, Alice Pearl Whisnant, daughter of Daniel Ausburn and Rose Alice Gault Whisnant. Rose died when her baby was two weeks old. Barbara Alice's husband's son, Abel Pinkney, was six years old when his father married Barbara Alice and he was still living with them in the 1900 Catawba County census and was 21 years old. Alice Pearl Whisnant lived with Peter and Barbara Alice until she was 14 years old.

Barbara Alice had a dozen brothers and sisters. She and her two sisters, Amanda Levina and Susan Elizabeth, were triplets. All three lived to be in their 60's. They had a brother, John C. Whisnant, who died in the Civil War.
