Pheobe Josephine Gilbert Simmons was born 25 March 1844 to Louisa Winans and Jonas Gilbert in Darke County, Ohio. She came to Nebraska with her parents in 1865 by wagon train. After a journey lasting 52 days, the wagon train reached its destination on Turkey Creek, in what later became Saline County. On April 16, 1866 she married William Marion Simmons at Fort Kearney, Kearney County, Nebraska. To this union 12 children were born, only 9 of which lived to adulthood.
