Jonas Gilbert - Born in Ohio - Northwest Territory

The Gilbert family is descended from a John Gilbert that came over to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1640, and who was the official Indian Commissioner for the Colony. Two paternal ancestors had died when Jonas Gilbert, third in descent from the first immigrant, was killed in the Wyoming Massacre, in the French and Indian War. This Massacre took place in western Pennsylvania. This Jonas was killed before his son Joseph was born. Joseph Gilbert went into the Northwest Territory with, Mad Anthony Wayne, and served in the Indian Wars of the 1790's. Here he settled and his son Jonas Gilbert was born in 1810. In 1836 Jonas Gilbert married Louisa Winans. To the union were born six children in Darke County Ohio. In 1865 Jonas Gilbert made up a wagon train of colonists to go to Nebraska. After a journey lasting 52 days, the wagon train reached its destination on Turkey Creek, in what later became Saline County. Jonas became one of the counties first commissioners, the son became the counties first assessor. His son John continued to serve the citizens of Friend, Nebraska.
