Civil War Veteran
William Marion Simmons, born in Louisiana March 24, 1842, reared in Texas, served in the Confederate armies under Buckner, Forrest, A.S. Johnson and Joseph E. Johnson. Captured at Atlanta; Imprisoned in Ft. Douglas, Chicago, until the end of the war; went to Nebraska in 1865; served as scout under William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody; was a stage driver from Omaha to Denver; helped lay the Missouri Pacific Railway. On April 16th 1866, he married Phoebe Josephine Gilbert. Homesteaded 80 acres, built a dugout, and one room log cabin, and started establishing a home. From the date of his release from Ft Douglas in 1865 he had ridden horseback, worked on wagon trains, scouted, helped lay railroads, and driven stages as far west as Salt Lake City.
William Marion was raised by relatives - both parents were deceased before William was 8 years old in 1850.
