Robert C. Dean, Aged 16 Struck While Riding Bicycle Near Newark.
Darting from Lane Into Path of Machine, Youth Thrown Under Wheels of Vehicle

Robert Cecil Dean, 16-years-old, son of Mr. and Mrs. William B. Dean of Ogletown Road, near Newark, was fatally injured when struck by the bus which was carrying his younger brother home from the Newark School yesterday afternoon. The accident occurred while the youth was riding his bicycle on the Ogletown Road, in front of the Polish Orphanage and only a short distance from the Dean home.
David Dean, only a few years younger than Robert, sat in the bus and saw the vehicle strike his brother's bicycle. The victim was thrown beneath the wheels of the vehicle which then passed over his body. He was taken to the Flower Hospital at Newark in a truck owned by the orphanage. Suffering from a fractured skull, Robert was pronounced dead on arrival by Dr. Arthur A. Mencher.
Frank Smith, of Newark, driver of the school bus, told Privates Shaffer and Reynolds of the State Police, the boy rode his bicycle out of a land leading directly into the path of the vehicle which was taking students to their homes outside Newark. Smith said he swerved but could not avoid the accident. He was arrested on a technical charge of manslaughter and released under bail when arraigned before Magistrate Clarence Foster of Newark.
Robert was one of a set of triplets, born to the Deans 16 years ago. Herbert Dean is the only member of the set remaining as one of the brothers died soon after birth. In addition to his parents and two brothers, the victim is survived by two sisters, Misses Doris and Gladys Dean.
Funeral services will be held from the R.T. Jones Funeral Parlor in Newark, Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be in Newark Cemetery.
