UNCHANGING THINGS
MILDRED RICE

When life flowed smoothly o'er our way
And all seemed peaceful and serene
We saw not as we see today
The value of the things unseen.

But when the things we thought secure
Began to crumble and to fall
We found those things would not endure
Were not the real things after all.

But they who trust in God above,
Need know no want - need feel no care
Still left to us is life and love
Still left is faith and heaven and prayer.

Then though earth's comforts all seem fled
And doubt a fear our souls assail
Let us look up - God is not dead
There are some things which cannot fail.

Aunt Mildred was a wonderful aunt to each of her nieces and nephews. She always kept up on the latest happenings of each of the Rice families and their children. She paid us weekly visits in Doyon usually and later when she moved to Rogue River, Oregon and Missoula, Montana she corresponded with many of us. I have kept many of her best and my favorite letters.
When she moved to Rogue River, Oregon she sold the Rice Farm to Jim and June Braaten - it is now farmed by Mary Agnes Braaten (one of Aunt Mildred's very favorite friends.)
She loved to play anagrams when any of the Rice Kids would come to the farm. She was a wonderful daughter and caretaker to her Mother and her sisters' Alta and Marion. My best books always came as gifts from Aunt Mildred. My favorites were the "Little House On The Prairie" series, the Bobsey twins, and the great jigsaw puzzles. We always loved to hear her play the pump organ when we went to the farm. Aunt Mildred and the time we spent with her will always remain as some of my best childhood memories.
