CLYDE Charles E. Herink, 93, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, Park Villa Care Home, Clyde, Kan. He was born July 15, 1915, in rural Cuba, Kan., to Charles and Anna (Kopsa) Herink.

He started school at Tabor Country School. He and his parents later moved to Cuba, where they had a dairy. Every morning and evening, he would deliver milk to their customers. Sometimes he would be late for school, but being a good student, he was excused. In high school, he played the trumpet in the band and was a member of the boys glee club and played on the basketball team. After graduating high school, he moved to Crete, Neb., to work at a brewery. He later returned to Cuba and married his high school sweetheart, Tyra Lahodny, in 1934 at Beloit.

They moved to Concordia, where Charles was employed by the State Highway Department and later took a job with List and Clark Construction. In 1939, Charles, Tyra and small son Jim moved to Clyde, where he began farming. He was one of the first farmers in the area to have a mounted corn picker and plant soybeans. Besides his own work, Charles did a lot of custom work. In the winter, he would haul hay with Bernard Chavey and help his good friend Arvid Detrixhe working on vacuvators and making deliveries. When he retired from farming, Charles worked for Joe Detrixhe until his health began to fail. He liked to hunt, fish, play pool, attend auto races and work in the garden in his spare time.

Survivors include his wife, Tyra Herink, of Clyde; a son, Jim Herink and wife Jan, of Manhattan; a daughter, Diedra Blackwell, of Hays; grandchildren, Cheryl Williamsen and husband Paul, of Rossmoor, Calif., Sheila Wildeman and husband Terry, of Lawrence, Heather Blackwell, of San Diego, and Scott Herink and wife Chris, of Topeka; great-grandchildren, Michael Williamsen, of Rossmoor, Maryan, Ashley and Garrett Wildeman, of Lawrence, and Katherina and Anna MarieHerink, of Topeka.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at United Methodist Church, Clyde, with the Rev. Anita Strommen officiating.

Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Clyde. Memorials may be made to Clyde Ambulance Fund.
Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at Chaput Mortuary, 310 Washington, Clyde. For more information or to send condolences, visit www.chaput buoy.com.
