Emma was the fourth of six children born to William and Eliza (Meier) Tatkenhorst. She had three older sisters: Minnie, Lena, and Martha. A few years after her death her parents followed her mother's parents to Lincoln County, Kansas with their surviving daughters and son John; Ben was born after they arrived in Lincoln County, Kansas.

Gary Bohn found this obituary for little Emma (note that for some reason she is called "Minnie"):

DIED
Columbus (IN) Evening Republican
29 Jul 1890

TATKINHORST (sic) - Minnie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Tatkinhorst (sic), near Jonesville, at 10 p.m., July 28, 1890, of brain fever, aged 3 months.
Funeral services conducted by Rev. Marquet, July 30, at 10 o'clock at the residence. Interment at Jonesville cemetery.

========================================
Obviously, she was buried in that St. John cemetery instead of what we now call the Jonesville Cemetery.
