GALVA, Ill. — Betty Marie Appenheimer McDonald Dustin of Saxon Road in Galva, a lifelong resident of the area and a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away early Saturday morning, Dec. 24, 2011. She was 90.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012, at 12:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Kewanee.
Mrs. Dustin was married to Harold Dustin, a prominent long time Stark and Henry County livestock and grain farmer, who passed away in 2003. She was born October 24, 1921, in Toulon, one of seven children of Alpheus and America Appenheimer. She was first married to Lawrence McDonald of Peoria, who died in 1962. She married Harold Dustin in 1970.
She is survived by three children, Judy Thorner (John) of River Forest, Ill., Tom McDonald (Barbara) of Las Vegas and Laurie Newlin (Scott) of Barrington, Ill.; two stepdaughters, Peggy Dustin Kehe (David) of Bellingham, Wash., and Judy Dustin Groesbeck (Jonathan) of Tiburon, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; four sisters, Dorothy Appenheimer Schmidt of Toulon, Juanita Appenheimer Murray of Bloomington, Ind., Kate Appenheimer Kerr of Tallahassee, Fla., and Glenna Appenheimer Omanson of Aurora, Ill.; and one sister-in-law, Rose Dolk Appenheimer of Dixon.
Mrs. Dustin was an active member of En Bon Traine Club, the CLIO Club, the Garden Club of Kewanee and Kewanee First United Methodist Church.
Betty and Harold originated the Saxon wiener roast and hosted the neighborhood event in their timber every September for many years, a tradition she continued after his death.
