Alpheus Ray Appenheimer, 83, died Saturday at 3:15 p.m. Dec. 14, 1974, at the Kewanee Public Hospital.
He was born January 3, 1891, at Leoti, Kansas, the son of Alpheus Wheeler Appenheimer and Melissa Olive Witcher Appenheimer. He married America Swango on October 4, 1917, at Toulon.
He is survived by six daughters and one son who are Alpheus Clay Appenheimer of Dixon, Mrs. Roy (Dorothy) Schmidt of Toulon, Mrs. Harold (Betty) Dustin of rural Galva, Mrs. Haydn (Juanita) Murray of Bloomington, Ind., Mrs. Kathryn Young of West Palm Beach, Florida, Mrs. Phil (Glenna) Omanson of Rockford, Illinois, and Mrs. Jack (Yvonne) Gaston of Glendale, Arizona. Surviving are 22 grandchildren and five great-granddaughters and one brother, Clarence of Toulon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one sister, one brother and one grandson.
He was a member of the Toulon American Legion Post No. 416. He was a member of the United States Marine Corps in World War I, in the Second Division, Fourth Brigade, 6th Machine Gun Battalion, Headquarters Company. He saw service in the five major operations of Chateau-Thierry, Thien Court, Kamines and Jaulnay, Champagne and Mt. Blanc and St. Etienne. He was cited for gallantry in action on October 30, 1918. He received two Croix de Guerres, four Bronze and four Silver Stars.
He was a farmer most of his life and was a sorghum maker for 25 years. He retired in 1957.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Kidd Funeral Home with Rev. Eugene Anderson, minister of the First Baptist Church, officiating.
Burial was in Evergreen Memory Gardens, south of Kewanee.
