Janet Semple was born on 24 June 1876 in Dalserf, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, a daughter of Henry Barr Semple (1849-1918) and Jeanie "Janet" Campbell (Stewart) Semple (1849-1925).

She is the sister of William Semple (1871-1944); Jane Campbell (Semple) Whitelaw (1872-1953); John Semple (1879-1941); Henry Semple, Sr (1881-1953); Marion (Semple) Mauchline (1883-1955); Thomas Semple (1886-1953); Agnes Nancy (Semple) Haddon (1889-1974) and Isabella "Isabel" Semple (1891-1969).

On 7 December 1906, Janet Semple, age 30, married John Lang (1875-1946), a farmer at age 31, in Swinhill, Dalserf, Lanark, Scotland. In South Lanarkshire, Scotland, John had been residing at West Machan, Larkhall and Janet at Swinhill, Dalserf.

On 28 November 1946, her husband, John Lang at age 71, died of a cerebral hemorrhage in Larkhall, South Lanarkshire, Scotland.

For a short time in the early 1950's, Janet stayed with her nephew (Henry "Harry" Semple) and his family at 120 Craigbank St, Strutherhill, Larkhall, Lanarkshire, Scotland. An envelope was saved by family descendants that she mailed from the Larkhall address to her brother and his wife, Henry and Jeanie Semple, in Miami, FL., date mailed unknown.

On July 15, 1953, Janet (Semple) Whitelaw, age 77, died in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, UK. Her brother, Henry Semple, died 2 days later in Miami, FL. Her place of burial or if cremation is unverified.

Comment from her great nephew, Douglas Semple, in 2013: "Janet had a lovely wee house of her own in Larkhall and only stayed with us (Harry & Martha Semple family) for a short time when she was recovering from an illness. I can barely remember her but from all reports she was a real character."
