BARBARA PETERS MILLER, Age 77, longtime educator in the Charleston R-1 School district, as well as other schools in rural Mississippi County, died Monday, May 12, 2014, at her home in Bertrand.

Born February 18, 1937, at Bertrand, MO, to the late John Albert Peters, Sr. and Mabel Ann Woods Peters, she had lived in Bertrand most of her life. She was the salutatorian of the 1954 graduating class of Diehlstadt High School and a 1956 graduate of the then Southeast Missouri State College at Cape Girardeau with a B.S. in Elementary Education with certificates that allowed her to teach English K-12, then received her Masters in Counseling in 1988.

Her teaching career began in 1957 at the Wyatt Elementary School. She taught in Wyatt for 9 years, then Mark Twain School for a year, then Bertrand until 1969, when the schools consolidated. She taught at Hearnes Elementary in Charleston until she became the Elementary Counselor in 1991. She served as counselor until her retirement in 1996, with a total of 40 years full time education, including many summer schools. She continued to work for the school system in counseling for 12 more years. Besides working in the school system, she supervised student teachers for Southeast Missouri State University and Central Methodist University for 10 years. She touched many lives throughout her teaching career. During her career, she helped start the Parents as Teachers Program in 1987. She, along with a co- teacher were awarded the Business W eek Award for Innovative Teaching in 1990, one of one hundred grants given across the country. The program was published in Business Week Magazine. Also in 1990, she was awarded the Business and Professional Women's Club Educator of the year. In 1996, she was awarded the Meritorious Service to Education Award by the Missouri State Teachers Association in the Southeast Missouri District. Mrs. Miller was a past member of the National, State, and District Counseling and Guidance Association, Katherine Boone Music Club, Missouri State Teachers Association, and the Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Society, as well as a member of the First Baptist Church of Bertrand, which she loved dearly, where she served as church clerk, Sunday school teacher, and in various other ways.

August 23, 1957, she married Larry Wayne Miller, who survives of the home.

Also surviving are: two daughters and sons in law, Eleanor Susan and Brad F. Hequembourg and Elizabeth Jane and Richard M. Rolwing all of Charleston; six brothers, Mike (Janice) Peters of Charleston, Jerry (Pat) Peters of Benton; Steve (Susan) Peters of Sikeston; Rick (Christie) Peters of Arcola, IL, David (Carolyn) Peters of Bertrand and Larry Peters of Bertrand; two sisters, Dianne (Danny) Babb of Charleston and Donna Peters of Bertrand; three grandchildren, Hannah Elizabeth (Jacob) Dirnberger of Charleston; Ryan Otto Rolwing of Columbia and Finley Miller Hequembourg of Charleston.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, John Albert "Junior" Peters, Jr., and two sisters, Betty Crook and Dorothy Elser.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Thursday, May 15, 2014, at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston where funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 16, 2014. Rev. Tom Ayers and Rev. Cody Aldrich, will officiate. Eulogies will be given by Bob Graham and Darrell Hoppe.

Music will be provided by Elizabeth Clevenger and Terry Parker.

Interment will follow in the Dogwood Cemetery near East Prairie under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be her nephews, John Elser, Scott Peters, Brent Peters, Hudson Peters, Daniel Babb, Carson Peters, Nathan Peters, Josh Peters and Jared Peters.
