Mary Thornton was born in Summit Co., Ohio to Samuel & Barbara Shaffer Thornton on Dec 23, 1829. She married Cephas Smith Jan 11, 1846 in Hancock Co., Ohio. The couple had 2 children:
Morris Smith 1847-1909 and Louisa Smith Mason 1849-1902.

Mary was living with Ervin Campbell & his children in Douglas Co., IL in the 1880 Census. In the 1900 Census Mary was living with her first child Morris Smith and his family in Chandler, Lincoln Co., OK. She died in Lincoln Co., OK in 1909 and is buried next to her son, Morris and his wife Brizillia Prince. In the 1900 Census her third husband was living with his son, James Campbell. The couple may have been separated or divorced.
