Hiram was the youngest child of Samuel Thornton (1805-1852) and Barbara Ellen "Barbary" Shaffer. He married Mary Ann Hughes 13 Sep 1864 in Douglas Co., IL. They had two daughters: Ruth Ann Thornton (1865-1956) and Dora Thornton (1866-1867).After the death of Mary Ann, on the 1st of March 1870 Hiram married Sarah Hughes sister, Sarah Jane Hughes. From this union the couple had 10 children:
