Son of William & Margaret Somerville Bates, born on his Father's farm at the foot of Crane Mountain, Johnsburg, Warren Co., NY. He was 1st married to Elizabeth Twiss ca 1857, and she died possibly in childbirth in 1859. He married 2d 25 Oct.1862 Maria Louisa McKee Bates Attempted to join the Army during the civil war, drove a horse & wagon all the way to Plattsburgh, NY to enlist but when he arrived, he learned the war had ended. Built a log cabin at the foot of Crane Mountain on a piece of his father's property and had a small farm. Was father of 9 children, who all reached maturity.

Nov. 9, 1907 Johnsburg, Mr. and Mrs. William Bates are moving to Glens Falls. Charles Kenyon of Garnet has purchased their farm here. They waited until after their daughter Alice' wedding, the following August, before they left.

Last few years of his life, lived with dau. Lill Kenyon on Johnsburg to Garnet Rd. where he died. He is buried with both wives. It should be noted that his 1st wife was probably moved here in the 1890's when the cemetery was founded, from the little William Bates Sr family plot at the old farm.

JOHNSBURG— William Bates, aged seventy-three, died Sunday night The funeral was held from the Wesleyan Church yesterday.
