Elmer H. Kowalski, 87, of 5252 Werth Rd., Alpena passed away Saturday September 27, 2008 at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. Born May 31, 1921 in Wilson Twp., to William and Mary Siess and served in the United States Army during W.W.II. He married Charlotte Strabel in 1978 and she preceded him in death in 1990. On April 27, 1991 he married Bernice (Olson) Kowalski. Mr. Kowalski engaged in farming most of his life and also worked as a carpenter. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Herron, VFW and the Carpenters Union. Elmer is survived by his wife Bernice; 2 daughters Diane Couture of Martha's Vineyard, Shari and husband Kurt Gerlofs of Kalamazoo; 5 sons Kenneth and wife Laura of Alpena, Ronald and wife Rhonda of North Carolina, Dale and wife Mary of Alpena, Wayne and wife Jill of Alpena, Glen and wife Carla of Alpena 13 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren; 3 step children Janet and husband Joseph Wolbert of Grand Blanc, Curtis and Kristine Kowalski of Lennon, Danny Kowalski of Grand Blanc; 4 step grandchildren; 2 sisters Esther Mullay of Alpena, Frances Howick of Colorado; and 1 brother Robert of Alpena. Mr. Kowalski was preceded in death by one daughter Cheryl, son in law Ray Couture and 1 sister Ruth Hartman. Mr. Kowalski is at the Bannan Funeral Home where friends may call on Monday from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday from 2-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:45 p.m. Visitation will continue on Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church - Herron from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. with Rev. Robert Mikkelson officiating. Full military honors will be accorded him at the cemetery by VFW Post 2496 - Alpena. Interment: St. Matthew Lutheran Church Cemetery
