MRS. G. G. SHAUER DIES
CITY SHOCKED BY DEATH OF CLUB LEADER
Had Been Recuperating in Chicago Hospital from Operation, When Relapse Claimed Her Life.

FUNERAL TO BE HELD
SATURDAY, 2 O'CLOCK

Death claimed Louise Charlotte Shauer, wife of Gustave G. Shauer, Thursday night at 6 o'clock in Billings Memorial hospital, Chicago, where on New Years day she submitted to a major operation.
News of her passing cast a pall of sorrow over Valparaiso and Porter county where she was known for her widespread activities in lodge, club, social, church and welfare work.
Her unexpected death was a profound shock to her family and friends because she was well on the way to recovery when stricken suddenly with an embolism.
Members of her family were at her bedside when death came. The end was as peaceful as if she had fallen asleep. Justin Shauer, a son, visited his mother yesterday noon and found her in excellent spirits. Later he was summoned to her side when her condition took a sudden turn for the worse.
Everything within the scope of medical powers was brought to into play to restore the spark of life, but they failed.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Methodist Episcopal church. Rev. Frank Roy Briggs, of Terre Haute, Ind., former Pastor here, and Rev. J. E. Porter, present pastor, will conduct the services. Burial will be in Graceland cemetery.
The body will lie in state at the Frank A. LePell and Son funeral home on Monroe street, where friends may view it after 6 o'clock this evening, up until the time of the funeral.
Louise Charlotte Shauer was born in Aurora, Ill., on April 2, 1864, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S.V. Brundage. Two years later the family moved to Chicago.
On Oct. 12, 1881, she was married to Gustave G. Shauer, in Chicago, and to this union were born five children, four of whom, with the husband, survive. They are: George Shauer, Justin O. Shauer, and Mrs. Retta Ogden, of this city, and Mrs. Clara Polacheck, of Milwaukee, Wis. A son, Herbert, died in 1909.
She also is survived by two brothers, Alonzo and Walter Brundage, of Chicago, and six grandchildren, Herbert and Jane Polacheck, Charlotte, Audrey, Janet and George Shauer II. Her parents and two brothers preceded her in death.
In 1912 the family came to Valparaiso and Mr. Shauer purchased a farm at Flint Lake, where he started a large apple orchard.
Later Mr. Shauer, in company with his sons, Justin and George, embarked in the moving picture business in Valparaiso, where they erected the Premier theatre, the city's most magnificent playhouse.
Mrs. Shauer was prominently identified with the Parent-Teachers' Association work in both county and state. She founded the Flint Lake Mothers' club in 1921, and at the time of her death was president of the P. T. A. organization.
In addition to her connection with the P. T. A. work, Mrs. Shauer found time to be interested in many other projects in Valparaiso and Porter county. She was a life member of the Methodist Episcopal church, was past president of the American Legion auxiliary, and was affiliated with the Maccabees, Royal Neighbors, Women of the Moose, Eastern Stars, White Shrine, Neighborhood Sisters, Harmony club, Hoosier Apron Club, Valparaiso Womans' Club, Forfeit club, W. B. A., Women's Relief Corps., Sons of Union Veterans' Auxiliary, Kings Daughters, Wesleyan Guild, Lady Foresters, and Euchre club.
Despite her multiplicity of interests, Mrs. Shauer always had time for anything of a worth-while project. Her life was an inspiring example of what a good woman can do when she consecrates her abilities to the task of making life easier and happier for those around her.
