Mr. Shauer died Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at his home, following an extended illness. Death was due to a pneumonia attack suffered a week ago. He had been in ill health since a severe case of pneumonia suffered 27 years ago. During the last five years he had been bedfast.
George A. Shauer was born on September 4, 1882, in Chicago, a son of Gustave G. Shauer and Louise C. (Brundage) Shauer. In his younger days he won considerable renown as a baseball player with a number of leading Chicago semi-professional teams. Later he engaged in business with his father in Chicago.
In November, 1913, following a health breakdown, he disposed of his business interests and came to Valparaiso with other members of his family for the benefit of his health.
A tract of land was acquired on the south side of Flint lake, where a home was built and a large apple orchard planted. Through expert cultivation the orchard became one of the finest in the county. Mr. Shauer was president of the Shauer Flint Lake Orchard company at the time of his death.
In 1921, in company with his father, G. G. Shauer, and brother, Justin O. Shauer, the property at the southeast corner of Lafayette and Lincolnway, then occupied by the Hotel Spindler, was purchased and the building razed for the erection of the present Premier theatre. The new theatre, one of the finest in northern Indiana at the time, was opened that year with the showing of the picture, "The Great Moment," featuring Gloria Swanson and Milton Sills.
When the Citizens' Savings and Trust company bank was formed here and had quarters in the in the Bornholt building on Lincolnway, Mr. Shauer was a member of the original board of directors. Later the institution was merged with the Valparaiso National Bank.
Fraternally, Mr. Shauer was affiliated with the Royal Arcanum lodge of Oak Park, Ill.; Porter Lodge of Masons, of this city; Valparaiso Commandery, Knights Templars, Shriners, Valparaiso Lodge of Elks, and Valparaiso Rotary club. He was a member of the Methodist church of this city.
Mr. Shauer was united in marriage on September 17, 1907, to Nell C. Schlesinger, of Chicago. She survives together with an adopted daughter, Mrs. Frank Bailey of Valparaiso; one brother, Justin O. Shauer of Valparaiso, and two sisters, Mrs. Retta Ogden of Valparaiso and Mrs. Clara Polacheck of Milwaukee, Wis., and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. and Mrs. G. G. Shauer, parents of Mr. Shauer, preceded him in death, Mrs. Shauer on January 17, 1933, and Mr. Shauer on May 4, 1934.
