Mrs. Emma Bernettie Nichols, past 91 years of age, who passed away March 7, left a record number of descendants. Mother of twelve children, ten of whom survive she leaves forty-sever grandchildren, ninety-two great grandchildren and eighteen great, great grandchildren.

Emma Bernettie, eldest daughter of Emmett and Sarah Buck, was born July 18, 1863, at Pontiac Illinois, and passed away at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs Nettie Bloomer, near Lebanon, Kansas, March 7, 1955, at the age of 91 years, 7 months and 19 days.

In childhood she moved with her parents to Missouri and late to Cloud County, Kansas where she met and married Francis Albert Nichols at Sulphur Springs, Kansas, July 27, 1877. Mr and Mrs Nichols moved to Smith County to establish a home and resided in Smith County until the death of her husband July 9, 1937.

Twelve children were born to this union. An infant son and a daughter, Mrs. Eva Baker; three brothers, John, Charley and Walter; and sister, Martha, preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn her passing, six daughters and four sons; Mrs. Minnie Peters, Arthur, and Burl of Emmett Idaho; Mrs. Ollie Grothaus, Nevada, Mo.; Mrs. Lula Gardner, Ensign; Mrs. Amy Roath, Topeka; Mrs. Lillie McBride and Mrs. Alma Williams, Wymore, Nebraska; John Barlett, Nebraska; and Clarence Burwell, Nebraska; two brothers, Will and Jim Buck and one sister, Mrs. Mary Brogan, all of Emmett Idaho; also forty-seven grandchildren, ninety-two great grandchildren, eighteen great great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews and a host of neighbors and friends.

She was one of the early settlers of Smith County, and quite familiar with the struggles and hardships of pioneer life and has witnessed many changes in her lifetime.

She gave her heart to Christ when a young woman and was for many years a faithful member of the White Eagle Free Methodist church. She was a good neighbor and friend to all who knew her and a loyal Christian until her death. Grandma Nichols as she was called by her friends, has been in failing health and confined to her bed for the past seven years and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Funeral services were held from Simmons-Olliff Funeral Home, March 10 with the reverend A.E. Grothaus, officiating. Burial was in Fairview cemetery.
